The Leonid showers, which will peak at 5: 00 AM EST-US (GMT -5), Nov. 17, could produce falls at a rate of 20 meteorites per hour, while a new moon is not likely to interfere in the viewing especially near midnight, when the moon will begin descending.
The meteors are debris shed from the parent comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle , and made famous by their spectacular light show in 2001 when people witnessed thousands of meteors falling each hour.
The shower occurs in the constellation Leo (the Lion). To find Leo in the sky, locate the Big Dipper in the northeast. Imagine poking a hole in the bottom of the Big Dipper’s bowl. As the water runs out, it would fall on the back of Leo the Lion.The next Leonid meteor show with such a large number of falling meteors will occur in about 2032.
