Yup, that’s a robot. A full sized human robot ready to do things that you probably can, but are too lazy to do. A team of wizards from Carnegie Mellon University’s National Robotics Engineering Center is presently building a new “human-scale” robot in order to compete in DARPA’s Robotics Challenge. It’s a pretty fun looking robot despite the fear of Skynet taking over and having it kill us all.
My favorite part are the treadmill-like legs that allow it move along like a tank either on all fours or upright on the legs. The remaining limbs can be used for opening valves (pickle jars) or power tools. CMU has affirmed that it’ll “be able to perform complex, physically challenging tasks through supervised autonomy,” just the type of robot I need when I’m in a jam.
