Kerning is one of those skills that you can only get better at with experience. As a designer, it’s not always easy to get the right placement for a word in a tight space or in an interesting shape. With practice it can be much easier, but it’s never easy to get it perfect.
In comes Kerntype, a game that will help you get a better feel for what it’s like to work with typography. It’s a very simple game with a very simple premise of eye-balling the spacing (kerning) between letters and aligning them correctly. Your scored is given on a 0/100 scaled based on how close you are to the pre-defined perfect spacing.
It’s a great game that is 10 rounds and only takes about 5-10 to play through each time. To give you a good idea of how tough it is; I’ve been graphic designing for a little over 10 years and I got an 80/100 overall. I only played through once, so don’t judge me too harshly!
Kerntype was crafted by Mark MacKay and is multi-touch capable on multi-touch enabled devices.
